CHAPTER NINE

I stood in front of my closet, trying to figure out what to wear. I wanted to take Jeff out for dinner, but it seemed I wasn’t going to go anywhere, since I had nothing nice. A lot of button-down shirts lay on my bed, but each one I tried on didn’t look right. The dark red one was too flashy, the black one made me look like I had a strange sickly skin tone. I pulled out another one, holding it in front of me.

It was dark blue, but somehow it seemed to be too—my doorbell jerked me out of my thoughts. Damn. I glanced at my watch, then sprinted to the door. A quick peek through the peephole confirmed what I already knew.

I was freaking late, Jeff stood in front of the door, and I still was running around in my boxers. I took a deep breath and opened it like everything was fine.

“Hey there. Come in.” I saw Jeff’s raised eyebrows. “I’ll be ready in just a minute.” Or five, I added silently.

“Hi. We still have a few minutes. I’ll wait in the living room.”

He smiled, although I could see he was a bit annoyed that I wasn’t ready yet. I hurried out of the hall to my bedroom and threw on the blue shirt. It would have to do, no matter what I thought about it. I probably wasn’t going to find something perfect for our first date at a restaurant anyway.

I made a quick detour to the bathroom, styled my hair, and then found Jeff in my living room, watching TV.

He gazed up as I stepped in front of the couch, and grinned at me. “You look good. Button-downs suit you.”

“Thanks. You look very nice, too.” Heat rushed to my face. I usually wore T-shirts, so I knew he wasn’t used to me wearing a button-down shirt. But if his looks were any indication, I should change that, and buy a few more.

“Ready to go? Our reservation is for eight.”

“I know. Let’s go, I’m ready.”

We took his car to the small restaurant I had picked based on recommendations from colleagues. They told me the Italian food was quite good, while at the same time it was affordable. Jeff pulled into the parking lot and cut the engine. He’d been silent most of the drive. We got out, and stood in line to be let in.

When we got seated a few minutes later, I noticed Jeff taking in the other people around us. I took my menu from the waitress and watched Jeff, who was still fidgeting and appearing uncomfortable overall.

“What’s wrong?” I asked him quietly. We sat in a corner, partly hidden from the view of others, but Jeff still tried to have everything in his line of sight.

“I-I just feel…do you think they know we are a couple? I mean, we are two men together, and—don’t get me wrong, but they will assume things, and I—”

“Let them.” I rested a hand on his thigh under the table.
